Our whipped tallow balm is one of the most skin-compatible moisturizers on earth — rich in fat-soluble vitamins and the same fatty acids your skin already makes. We render it slow, whip it light, and offer it four ways.

why tallow?
The cleanest moisturizer you can put on your skin
Tallow's fatty acid profile — mainly oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid — mirrors human sebum more closely than any plant-based oil†. That's why it absorbs quickly, doesn't clog pores, and leaves your skin feeling like skin, not a layer of cream.
We source exclusively from grass-fed, grass-finished and Wagyu cattle. The difference in vitamin content between grain-fed and grass-fed fat is not subtle — grass-finished tallow has 3–5× more conjugated linoleic acid* and significantly higher levels of fat-soluble vitamins*. Every batch is whipped by hand in our studio by our founder, Mary, a jet mechanic in the US Air Force before she started BeeHive.

Good for eczema-prone, sensitive skin
That fatty acid match to your skin's own sebum (see above) is also why a lot of people with eczema, dry patches, or generally reactive skin find tallow calmer than fragranced lotions — it sinks in without leaving the stinging or greasy-film feeling some plant oils and synthetic emulsifiers cause. Everyone's skin responds differently, so start with a small amount and see how yours does; this isn't a substitute for medical treatment. The fatty acid science behind why is the same reasoning our founder, Mary formulates every batch around.
How to pick the best tallow for skin
Not all tallow balm is the same, and the differences aren't cosmetic — they change how it actually performs on skin. A few things genuinely matter when you're comparing options:
Grass-fed vs. grain-fed sourcing. Grass-finished tallow carries 3–5× more CLA and meaningfully higher fat-soluble vitamin content than grain-fed (see the sourcing note above) — the fat itself is genuinely different, not just a marketing distinction.
How it's rendered. Slow, low-heat rendering and proper filtering is what determines whether a finished balm smells clean or carries an off, beefy note — rushed rendering is the single biggest reason people who've tried a bad tallow product assume tallow itself is the problem.
Ingredient list length. Tallow doesn't need much added to it to work — a short, legible ingredient list is usually a better sign than a long one padded with fillers.
An unscented option. If you're shopping for sensitive or eczema-prone skin specifically, fragrance — not the tallow — is the most common irritant. A brand that offers a genuinely fragrance-free version, not just a lightly-scented one, is worth prioritizing.
Whipped vs. raw texture. Raw rendered tallow is dense and can feel greasy going on; whipping air into it while it sets changes the texture to something that spreads and absorbs far more easily, without changing the fat itself.
Every batch we make checks each of those boxes — grass-fed and Wagyu sourcing from a single named farm in Lafayette, Indiana, slow-rendered until the smell is neutral, a short ingredient list, a true fragrance-free option, and hand-whipped for a texture that actually spreads. That's not a claim to being the only good option out there — there are other honest small-batch tallow makers doing this well too — it's just what we'd tell you to look for regardless of whose jar you end up buying.
Tallow skincare, made in Indiana
We're not a national brand drop-shipping tallow from who-knows-where. BeeHive is a studio in New Castle, Indiana, and our tallow comes from grass-fed and Wagyu cattle at a single named farm in Lafayette, Indiana. Every jar is rendered, whipped, and filled by hand here — then shipped across Indiana and the rest of the country, or picked up in person at our shop on Broad Street. If you've been looking for tallow skincare made in Indiana rather than mass-produced, this is it.

Everything about tallow
What is whipped tallow balm?+
Whipped tallow balm is a skin moisturizer made from rendered beef fat — specifically suet, the dense fat around the kidneys. We whip it until it's light and spreadable. It's rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, and the fatty acid profile closely mirrors human sebum, which makes it unusually well-absorbed.
Is tallow good for your face, or for eczema-prone skin?+
Yes to both. Tallow is one of the oldest face moisturizers in human history, and because its fatty acid profile is so similar to your skin's natural oils, it absorbs without leaving a greasy film. Many people with eczema-prone, dry-patch, or generally sensitive skin find it noticeably calmer than fragranced lotions — though everyone's skin is different, so start with a small amount and see how yours responds.
What's the difference between tallow and regular lotion?+
Most commercial lotions are water-based emulsions that rely on synthetic emulsifiers and preservatives to stay shelf-stable. Tallow balm contains no water — it's pure fat, which means no preservatives are needed and nothing dilutes the active ingredients. The tradeoff is that tallow is richer; you use less of it.
Is your tallow grass-fed?+
Yes. We source suet from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle. Grass-fed tallow has a higher concentration of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and fat-soluble vitamins than grain-fed, which is why sourcing matters.
How do I use tallow balm?+
Warm a small amount between your fingertips until it melts, then press it into clean skin. It works best on slightly damp skin — right after washing your hands or stepping out of the shower. A pea-sized amount covers your whole face; a quarter-sized amount handles both legs.
Does tallow balm smell like beef?+
No — not if it's rendered properly. Our tallow is slow-rendered from fresh suet, then filtered until the smell is neutral to slightly milky. Our scented balms have no detectable animal smell at all. The unscented formula has a very faint, clean fat smell on first application that disappears as it absorbs.
What's the difference between whipped and emulsified tallow?+
Whipped tallow is 100% fat — rendered tallow whipped with a small amount of other nourishing oils. It's rich, deeply moisturizing, and absorbed slowly. Emulsified tallow blends tallow with water (and a natural emulsifier), giving it a lighter, lotion-like texture that sinks in faster with no greasy finish. Dry or very sensitive skin tends to love the whipped; normal-to-combination skin often prefers the emulsified.
Is tallow balm safe during pregnancy?+
Our balms contain no essential oils that are contraindicated during pregnancy — no clary sage, no rosemary, no camphor. The fragrance-free and unscented formulas are the most commonly chosen during pregnancy. As with any new skincare product, check with your provider if you have specific concerns.
What's the best tallow for skin?+
The best tallow for skin comes down to five things: it's grass-fed and grass-finished (or Wagyu), so the fat itself carries more CLA and fat-soluble vitamins; it's slow-rendered until the smell is neutral rather than beefy; it has a short, legible ingredient list; it offers a genuinely fragrance-free option for sensitive or eczema-prone skin; and it's whipped rather than left raw, so it spreads and absorbs instead of sitting greasy on top. Hold any brand — ours included — to that checklist; it's what separates tallow your skin loves from tallow that disappoints.
Is there tallow skincare made in Indiana?+
Yes — BeeHive Body Co. is a small-batch tallow skincare studio in New Castle, Indiana, founded by Mary Hobbs in 2014. We render and hand-whip every batch in our own studio from grass-fed and Wagyu tallow sourced from a single named farm in Lafayette, Indiana. You can shop in person at 1335 Broad St in New Castle, or order online for shipping anywhere in Indiana and across the US.
